Who is Sales Tax & Tip for?

For anyone paying a check in the US or Canada: travellers who keep being surprised at the register, groups who split the bill, and anyone who would rather not tip by feel. The guide explains the customary amounts along the way.

What does the app cost?

The calculator is free and shows ads when you open the app. Pro is optional — monthly, yearly or a one-time lifetime purchase. The App Store shows the current price.

How does the app make money?

Through the ads in the free version and the optional Pro purchase. There is no account, no server of ours and nothing to sell: every calculation happens on your device.

How accurate are the tax rates?

The app carries the statutory sales tax rate of every US state plus DC and the exact combined rate of every Canadian province, and for the US additionally a typical combined state plus local rate. The values are stored in the app (as of 2026) and are not ZIP-code exact — local rates differ by city and county and change over time. The figures are estimates for convenience, not tax advice; your receipt is what counts.

Do I tip before or after tax?

Customary in the US and Canada is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, and that is the default. A switch in the calculator moves the tip to the taxed total whenever you want it there.

Does it work without a connection?

Yes. The rates travel with the app, so nothing is looked up online. No account, no sign-up — the only things that need a connection are the store, the ads and the links to the legal pages.

Which devices and languages?

iPhone and iPad from iOS 15. An Android version is in preparation. The app speaks English and German and follows your device language.
